What Is SSL?

SSL/TLS encrypts data between a visitor and a website and enables HTTPS.

Updated September 23, 2026

Why It Matters

HTTPS protects data in transit and is a basic expectation for modern websites. Many hosting plans include SSL certificates, but verify what is included and how renewal is handled.

What HTTPS Protects

TLS encrypts data moving between the visitor and the website, reducing the risk that intermediaries can read or alter traffic. Browsers signal HTTPS connections, and modern sites should treat it as baseline infrastructure.

What SSL Does Not Do

HTTPS does not make vulnerable plugins safe, prevent account compromise, remove malware, or replace backups. It protects transport, not every layer of website security.

Hosting Considerations

Many hosts provide certificates through services such as Let's Encrypt. Check whether issuance and renewal are automatic and whether every hostname you use is covered.
